Cartoonology Devotional 04-16-09 E. Larry Ross Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics. The New Testament records no incidents of people being offered up to lions, but we know from history that the Romans did so with early Christians. The Apostle Paul mentions being delivered out of the lion's mouth, but that was just an expression recognizing how God temporarily delayed his execution. There is a well-known story in the Old Testament, however. King Darius of Babylon placed Daniel in the den of lions. As a young man, Daniel was taken to Babylon to be trained for the king’s service. He was very wise, could interpret dreams and rose to great prominence. Because Daniel was preferred above the other princes of the kingdom, they plotted to have him killed. The plan was to have King Darius decree that if any man asked anything of any god or person besides the king for 30 days, that man was to be thrown into the lion’s den. Daniel was unwilling to adhere to the decree and prayed to the one, true Jehovah, God. After witnessing him doing this, the other princes reported it to the king and demanded that Daniel be thrown into the den of lions. Although Darius realized his mistake and was grieved, he ordered the sentence to be carried out. Daniel 6:16 (NKJV) 16 So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, "Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you." Darius spent the night fasting and praying for Daniel and the next morning went to the den of lions to investigate. He was pleased when Daniel answered him from the lion’s den. God had closed the mouth of the lions. Daniel 6:21-22 (NKJV) 21 Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live forever! 22 My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you." Daniel’s obedience to God produced some amazing results. Darius threw Daniels’s accusers to the lions and made a new decree recognizing the God of Daniel as the Living God. Every man in the kingdom was to tremble before Him, and Daniel prospered even more during the reign of Darius.
