Cartoonology Devotional 05-26-09 E. Larry Ross Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics. The world has been changing from the beginning. Some of it has been good and some of it not. Change is one thing we often cannot stop. Everything and everyone changes. It is resistance to change that has often hindered the church’s progress. People just do not like change. America's first bathtub was built in Cincinnati in 1842. Constructed of mahogany, lined with sheet lead, it was exhibited at a Christmas party. The next day the local newspapers denounced it as a "luxurious and democratic vanity." Doctors warned that the bathtub would be "a menace to health." The next year, Philadelphia undertook by public ordinance to prohibit bathing between November 1 and March 15. Two years later Boston made bathing unlawful except when prescribed by a physician. (Encyclopedia of 15,000 Illustrations: Signs of the Times.) This seems strange and funny now, but all of us have probably overacted to some kind of change just as radically. Fear and panic does not characterize the true follower of Christ. God has promised us power over fear. That doesn’t mean we accept everything that comes down the pike, but we do not have to be paralyzed by panic. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) 7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. 05-26-09 edrynn@verizon.net Click on the link here to see all previous Cartoonology Devotionals.
