Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
It has been known for a long time that positive reinforcement can change behavior in animals primarily because of the work of B.F. Skinner. It can also be used in the discipline of children. However, many people get it all wrong. If the reward is given first in order to obtain a certain behavior, it is bribery, not positive reinforcement. Plus, the desired behavior does not necessarily follow and a verbal or physical struggle often is the end result. Bribery will never accomplish obedience or self-discipline in your child. It will only necessitate a bigger and bigger bribe.
When used properly, positive reinforcement only follows the desired behavior. For example, you do not give a dog a treat in order to get him to sit. Instead, you give him a treat because he obeyed the command. Eventually, he will do it without a treat. By disciplining your children with this technique, you instill in them a sense of self-respect, dignity, and self-control. The child soon learns that right behavior in itself is a reward.
This is a source of great frustration for many parents. They keep giving bigger and bigger bribes trying to get their children to behave. Soon the size of bribes gets out of control and so do their children.
We all need positive reinforcement at times. Often a compliment, a smile, a kiss, a handshake, a hug or some other act of affirmation will do the trick. Don’t think it always has to be material things. Did you know that God is actually the author of positive reinforcement?
Hebrews 11:6 (NKJV) 6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. 05-07-09
