Cartoonology Devotional 07-09-09 E. Larry Ross When I was a boy, the sawmill where my dad worked burned to the ground. It happened when the night watchman fell asleep on the job and allowed the fire to escape in the boiler room, which was used to make steam for the lumber-drying kilns. It was a massive fire that required response from multiple fire departments. When the watchman woke up, he hung his huge scoop, which was used to feed the fire with sawdust and shavings, onto a rope that was connected to the steam whistle. This caused everyone to know something was wrong. I remember the whistle blowing for a long time before the fire finally brought it to an end. The word watchman is used frequently in the Old Testament of the Bible. His job was to stand guard on the wall and watch for any oncoming enemy that might want to take the city. The whole population of the city depended on him for their safety. It was of utmost importance that he stayed awake. Christ-followers are commanded to watch so that we can be on guard against Satan and aware of what God is doing. The scriptures indicate that by doing so, we can be alert to the second coming of Christ. We can see the warning signs, be prepared and not be caught off guard. He is coming. Are you watching? Are you ready? 1 Thessalonians 5:6 (NKJV) 6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 07-09-09 Click on the link here to see all previous Cartoonology Devotionals.
