Cartoonology Devotional 05-22-09 Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics. What makes one a hypocrite? Christians use the word sometimes to describe those inside the church. People outside the church use it describe church members. Jesus used the word a lot – 15 times in Matthew and mostly to describe the religious leaders of His day. The Greek word literally means stage-actor. Ancient actors would wear masks to portray a character and would use mechanical devices to change their voices. The word evolved to describe anyone who pretends to be one thing while in reality is another. Jesus lambasted the Pharisees for condemning others while claiming to be perfectly righteous themselves. But we all need to be careful about flaunting our own righteousness before men. We must remember is that we all are sinners. We also need to remember that confession and repentance cleanses us of sin, and when we do that, the mask comes off. We are no longer hypocrites. Our true nature has been revealed. Next, a change in character and lifestyle in order to remove the need to wear masks is necessary. It always feels better to just come clean. Matthew 7:5 (NKJV) 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye. 05-22-09 edrynn@verizon.net
