Cartoonology Devotional 07-10-09 E. Larry Ross Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics. There is nothing more liberating than receiving forgiveness, and nothing is more satisfying than granting forgiveness. Forgiveness is the very hallmark of God’s character, and God intends it to be for His people as well. People who cannot forgive are to be pitied the most, but so are the people who have a warped understanding of forgiveness. They are much like the man on his deathbed who finally offered forgiveness to a neighbor he considered a long-time enemy. “ I forgive you”, he said, “but after I die I plan to come back and haunt you the rest of your life”. Matthew 18:21-22 (NKJV) 21 Then Peter came to Him and said, "Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" 22 Jesus said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. According the Vine’s Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words, the word “forgive” in this passage means to “send forth or send away”. Not only is the sin removed, but the punishment is removed as well. In so many words, God forgets the sin of the repentant. He does not impute (count) it against us anymore. Jesus placed that same obligation upon us when it comes to forgiving our fellow man. According to our text above, not only is our forgiveness to be thorough, but it is also to be unlimited. No records are to be kept and there are no points to be earned. 07-10-09 Click on the link here to see all previous Cartoonology Devotionals.
