Cartoonology Devotional 08-24-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
We have all been guilty of doing things with ulterior motives, and we all probably know someone who does almost everything with ulterior motives. These are the people we sometimes would like to avoid. We recognize them as users and abusers.
One example of ulterior motive was when Henry Ford decided to close his factories on Saturdays. Many thought he was motivated for the welfare of his employees, but his motive was far from unselfish. He was hoping an increase in leisure time would lead to the sale of more cars, and it worked. Soon, the five-day workweek followed by the weekend almost became the norm worldwide, and as people traveled more, the more cars they purchased.
As this story reveals, the word ulterior, with respect to motives, refers to hidden selfish reasons for doing something. You can actually do a good thing but for the wrong reasons. Some people justify such by claiming that everyone will come out for the better, and therefore, it is OK. However, such claims often disregard the feelings of people who consider themselves deceived, used and disrespected. No true friendship or relationship can be had under these circumstances. True, honest friendship is worth more than gold.
Jesus reprimanded the religious leaders of His day for their ulterior motives. The rewards for honesty, integrity and righteousness far outweigh anything this world affords us.
