Cartoonology Devotional 07-06-09 E. Larry Ross Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics. Any good American knows the famous quote from Patrick Henry, “Give me liberty or give me death”, and that he played a vital role in the formation of our nation. He was a great orator and statesman, but he was a miserable businessman who died a man of miserly means in 1799. When his family opened his will they found these words, “This is all the inheritance I can give to my dear family: The religion of Christ will give One which will make them rich indeed." It seems Patrick Henry discovered the liberty that counts the most in life – the liberty that Christ gives. He was able to pass it on to his family and testify to it even in death. This liberty did not require the death of Patrick Henry or any other who would have it. Rather, it cost God the life of His precious Son, Jesus Christ who shed his blood for all mankind on the cross. Jesus came, lived and died to set men free from the bondage of self-deception, pride, greed and just sin in general. This freedom is not freedom to do, but it is freedom to be what we otherwise could not. It is freedom to be what God wants us to be. Only through faith in Christ can we find this kind of freedom. Without Christ we live in bondage to the power of sin. Thank the Lord the day is coming when we will be delivered by faith in Him from the very presence of sin. John 8:36 (NKJV) 36 Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed. 07-06-09 Click on the link here to see all previous Cartoonology Devotionals.
