Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
A cartoon depicts a rhinoceros dangling over the edge of a cliff with only his head keeping him from falling as he rests his chin on the edge. A bear comes running to the rescue, but the only thing he can do is place a large boulder on the head of the rhinoceros. The last frame shows the bear walking away, smiling and dusting off his hands. The caption reads "Friends may not be able to pull you up, but they will always think of ways to not let you fall".
What a treasure a true friend is. True friends are rare. The biblical definition makes that clear.
Proverbs 17:17 (NKJV)
17 A friend loves at all times, And a brother is born for adversity.
David and Jonathan are a good example of true friendship.
1 Samuel 18:1,3 (NKJV)
1 Now when he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
3 Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.
Laurence J. Peter once said, “You can always tell a real friend: when you've made a fool of yourself he doesn't feel you've done a permanent job.” (Encyclopedia of 15,000 Illustrations: Signs of the Times). Another quote, “I went out be find a friend, but could not find one there; I went out to be a friend, and friends were everywhere” (Proverbs 18:24). (unknown). The American Indian saying for friend was “one who carries my sorrow on his back”, a much more eloquent way of putting it.
The Bible describes Abraham as the friend of God (James 2:23). Jesus described his relationship with his disciples as that of friend (John 15:13-15), and he called Lazarus a friend (John 11:11). He even called Judas friend when he betrayed Him (Matthew 26:50). What a sharp contrast compared to the view of many pagan so-called gods, who are unconcerned about mankind, are often far removed and who strike terror and fear (not reverence) in the heart of men. How wonderful to have a God who loves and cares for His own and sent His son to die for them on the cross. What great blessing! 29-26-09
