Cartoonology Devotional 09-02-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
Appearances can be deceiving. I learned this as a child. My sister and I were playing in the yard when we noticed that our grandparent's house was on fire across the way. I took off running toward their house, but as I got closer, I noticed that what we thought was fire coming from the window was only a reflection of a brush fire next door. It looked so real that I would not have been convinced otherwise.
I think this is partly the reason the Lord warned us about judging other people. We might not have enough facts or know exactly what is going on in a person's life. We aren't able to judge properly.
A woman, known to be very judgmental, accused an innocent man of having an affair, because she saw his truck parked in front of a certain house. She spread rumors about him. People started watching every move he made. When he found out about it, he took his truck and parked it overnight in front of his accuser's house. She stopped spreading the rumors very quickly.
Appearances are important, and we should be careful not to jeopardize ourselves as much as possible. We must use scrutiny in every situation of our life so as not to cause people to suspect us of some unbecoming behavior.
I have had young, unmarried couples tell me that because they sleep in different beds, it is OK for them to live in the same house. That is a dangerous and foolish assumption for many reasons. Appearances can be deceiving, but we do not have to deceive ourselves.
