Cartoonology Devotional 09-15-09

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I still can't believe that I got my first school paddling in the second grade, because I was always a shy, timid kid. Mrs. Henrietta Mitchell was my teacher, and she saw me fighting with another kid on the playground. It had to be someone else. I can't remember whom I was scrapping with, or what the fight was about. The paddling wasn't so bad, but the long wait to see if my parents found out was horrible. I knew that I would get a second paddling if they did. For some reason, I was spared. I guess Mrs. Mitchell was kind enough not to tell on me.

Paddling is not the only means of discipline, but it is still an effective one. Fear has struck our schools and homes by the possibility of being sued for child abuse. We have a serious discipline problem, however. The greatest responsibility for the problem lies with the home. Many children and parents have no idea what discipline is, or why it is necessary. Corpral punishment has almost been outlawed, but I say lets make failure to paddle your children a crime punishable by law.

The lack of discipline at home and in school is the cause of lack of self-discipline in our society. After all, that is the purpose of discipline; to teach our children to discipline themselves as adults. The root of discipline is the word disciple. A disciple is a learner. Therefore, discipline serves as a teacher, and that is probably the most important teacher our children could have for life.
