I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Peanuts

In previous strips, Linus had made a deal with his teacher that if she gave up fingernail biting, he would give up his blanket. So far, she has succeeded. He is in agony and decides to surrender to her. Humility is one of those virtues that is not so easy to come by. Sometimes we become confused as to exactly what humility is. I once read a statement like this, “Humility is not thinking lowly of oneself, but thinking rightly about oneself.” In other words, groveling in the dust, doses not constitute humility. As Charlie Brown observed, such a posture becomes nauseating to others. We do not need to beat ourselves up. We simply need to recognize our strengths and gifts as well as our limitations, flaws and faults. We do not want to present ourselves as something we are not. Neither do we want to be haughty nor arrogant. Like most things, humility requires balance.

Proverbs 18:12 (NKJV) 12 Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility.
Proverbs 22:4 (NKJV) 4 By humility and the fear of the Lord Are riches and honor and life.
Colossians 2:18 (NKJV) 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind,
Philippians 2:3 (NKJV) 3 Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
