I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-16-09

E.Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Do you know people who seem to be afraid of everything and think the worst in almost every situation? Such people are often gullible and find themselves responding to almost every bit of bad news and sometimes even good news. They are often very literal meaning they take everything at face value with seemingly no ability to evaluate reality. They often overreact, and they also flit about from one notion to another never really quite sure what to believe. In other words, they live their entire conscious life in fear.

There are times to be afraid. A planeload of people was flying across the Atlantic. A voice comes on the intercom: "We are now flying at 35,000 feet. Please notice, out the right window, the two engines on that side are on fire, and the engines on the left had to be stopped. Look directly below; you will see a yellow recovery raft with six small dots on it. The dots are the pilot, co-pilot, flight engineer, navigator, and two hostesses. This is a recording."

God does not want us to be a people of fear, however. Rather, He wants us to fear (reverence) Him. When we do, we can have the peace that surpasses all understanding.

Psalm 112:1,7 (NKJV)
1 Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, Who delights greatly in His commandments.
7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 07-16-09
