Do you remember the saying, "She who rocks the cradle, rules the world?" It is for good reason that God made one of the 10 commandments to read: Exodus 20:12 (NKJV) 12 "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. Why would God make this one of the 10 commandments? Why father and mother? Why not the priests, the prophets, the judges or even the king? It is because family is the basic building block of society, and it is designed to be a training ground for honoring and respecting other authority figures. If we do not train our children to honor and respect us as parents, they will not likely respect others in authority. That is a major reason our society is riddled with so many social ills. God wants us to respect authority. Without it we grow up thinking we are smarter and more important than our parents, our teachers, our pastors, our civil servants, our bosses, our companies, our friends, God and all others with authority. The sin of pride easily overcomes us. We can become hypercritical and destructive.
