I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-26-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology Devotional. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Sarcasm is defined as the use of sharp, cutting remarks or language intended to mock, wound, or subject to contempt or ridicule. We have all said sarcastic things. Sarcasm is sometimes difficult to interpret. Some languages use a special punctuation mark to indicate a statement is sarcastic. The Ethiopian Semitic languages are an example.

I have known a few people who seem to live in a state of sarcasm. Almost anything you try to talk about is responded to with sarcasm. There is an air of arrogance and superiority about them. Often people try to couch their sarcasm in humor, but it is still inappropriate and hurtful.

There are instances of sarcasm in the scripture. One is Cain’s response to God when He asked him where his brother Abel was.

Genesis 4:9 (NKJV) 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" He said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

Cain was not only being rude toward God but his sarcastic answer indicates his total lack of concern for people, especially his brother. Concern for others and Christian fellowship should be a priority for every believer. Repentance and forgiveness are essential. Love and respect are the better responses over sarcasm. We are indeed our brother’s keeper when it comes to these things.

Ephesians 4:29 (NKJV) 29 Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. 06-26-09
