I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-14-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

A man who thought he recognized him approached Senator Howard Baker. He said to Baker, “ I know who you are. Don’t tell me. Let me remember. I will get it in a minute.” After a few moments, the senator said, “Howard Baker.” “No, that’s not it”, the man replied.

Most of us are not particularly memorable and will be soon forgotten at the end of our life. Have you ever noticed that many people who are long remembered are notoriously famous? Some people that come to mind are Billy the Kid, Bonnie and Clyde, Charles Manson, etc. If that is what it takes, I would just as soon be forgotten.

The scriptures call for Christ followers to be servants. Our challenge is to magnify Christ in all that we do. Servants are not to be remembered or honored. Their master is to be the object of awe, honor and adoration. Jesus is our Master and Lord and all that we do is to exalt Him. Jesus does promise, however, that those who serve and follow Him will in time receive their own honor.

John 12:26 (NKJV)
26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.

Notice in the text that part of that honor is the privilege of being in the presence of Christ, which includes this life as well as eternity. I would much rather be remembered by the Lord even if long forgotten by men. 07-14-09
