I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-03-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The need to have the last word is difficult for some of us to overcome, especially in an argument. Of course, I always get the last word in my house - “I’m sorry”. That’s OK. An apology is the best way to have the last word.

There are several problems with always wanting to get in the last word.

1. It is selfish. You just want to be heard.

2. You don’t listen when you are thinking of getting in the last word.

3. It turns conversation into a contest or debate.

During the crucifixion, Jesus had the last word. As he died, he said, “It is finished”. The Greek word he used was “tetelestai”. This word was written on a promissory note when the debtor made the final payment. It meant “paid in full”. Jesus paid the promissory note in full by redeeming mankind with His own blood.

Jesus will have the final word on judgment day as well, and the last word has already been spoken.

John 12:48 (NKJV)
48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him--the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. 06-03-09
