I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Devotional

Frank & Ernest
Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
Here is another one of those references to reincarnation that pop up so often in our culture today.  We have already discussed how reincarnation does not square with scripture and how it is a false teaching in a previous devotional.  There is another misconception in this cartoon and that is the idea that people become angels when they die.  Quite frequently, I hear people talk about little children becoming angels in heaven when they die.
We are mystified by angles, and we see all kinds of angel paraphernalia in gift shops, jewelry stores, etc.  It is almost as if people worship angels, or at least, superstitiously treat them as good luck charms.  Some people even carry angel-like creations with them.  All of these are incompatible with the Bible and Christian theology.
What does the Bible say about angels and how should we view them?  The word angel in both Hebrew and Greek simply means messenger.  The word is applied to both humans and heavenly beings sent from God.  Revelation 1:20 is probably a reference to the pastors (messengers) of the seven churches.  Sometimes the word angel is a reference to the manifestation of God Himself (Exodus 3:1-6).  Other times angels are referred to as ministering spirits or guardian angels (Hebrews 1:13-14).  This is how we most often think of angels – as supernatural guardian beings sent from God to minister to us and protect us.
We should remember that angels are special, created beings (Colossians 1:16).  They are not equivalent to humans and humans never become angels (Psalm 8:4-5).  Children do not become angels; rather they have guardian angels assigned to them (Matthew 18:10).   Satan is a fallen angel and leads a host of fallen angels (Revelation 12:1-9. Matthew 25:41).  We are cautioned against worshipping angels (Colossians 2:18-19, Revelation 22:6-9).
So, then, what is the purpose of angels?  Some of them are listed here.
Angels serve God (Psalm 103:21)
Angels praise God (Psalm 148:2)
Angels protect God’s people (Daniel 6:22)
Angels encourage Christians (Hebrews 1:14)
Angels carry out God’s judgment (Revelation 20, 2 Samuel 24:16-17)
You might never see an angel in your lifetime, but you can rest assured they exist, and you can take confidence that God will surround you with His angels when necessary.  So, let this be just one more reason to praise and worship God.  Because He loves you, He takes care of you.  What great provision!  02-23-09
