I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-06-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

A woman was visiting her neighbor and enjoying her flower garden. “You must have a green thumb”, exclaimed the woman. “Oh, no, just brown knees”, said the neighbor.

Everyone knows that only God truly makes things grow. He designed the system, He sends the rain, He provides the sun and He provides the nutrients. However, God chose to make man his partner in the process. Adam and Eve were assigned the duty of working in and taking care of the earth. No garden just grows or produces of its own accord. Some brown knees are necessary. Hands, too.

God planted the first garden, and after he made Adam, he placed him in that garden to be a steward of it. Man has a natural attraction to the earth. After all it was from earth he came, and it is earth that provides all that is necessary for man’s physical welfare. It is interesting that the human body contains many of the chemical elements of the earth, although in different proportions. This stands to reason since God made man from earth. Did you know that earth was God’s basic building block and from it he made all living creatures?

Genesis 2:8 (NKJV)
8 The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed.
Genesis 2:15 (NKJV)
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 06-06-09
