I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Grand Avenue

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

A captain was assigned a new ship.  He was very proud of his new assignment and was completing his first voyage.  Looking out over the bow of the ship in the night, he saw the light of another vessel heading toward him.  It was obvious there would be a head-on collision.  The captain sent a message for the other ship to change its course.  The response was defiant.  So the captain sent a second message again ordering the ship to change course.  “Change your course.  I am the captain”, he said.  The response was, “No, change your course.  I am the lighthouse”.

There is a time when resolve is good, but when you are challenging reality, it is best to change your course.  This is especially true when we find ourselves challenging God and His Word.  Our world is full of this kind of reckless mindset.  God is not going to change His Word.  Both He and His Word are final and eternal. (Isaiah 40:8)

Malachi 3:6 (NKJV)
6 "For I am the Lord, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
Hebrews 13:8 (NKJV)
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
This is of special concern to me on the subject of homosexuality.  I once had a ministerial student, of all people, tell me that there is nothing in the Bible opposing homosexuality.  I immediately wanted to check and see what bible he was reading, because nothing is further from the truth.
Leviticus 18:22 (NKJV)
22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.
Leviticus 20:13 (NKJV)
13 If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.
Romans 1:26-28 (NKJV)
26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.
27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.
28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting;
How can we forget Sodom and Gomorrah? (Genesis 19)  Where do we think we the word sodomy came from?   Of course, all un-confessed, willful sin against God places one on a track to destruction. (Romans 6:23)  You can stand on a railroad track with your eyes closed, but that doesn’t make the train go away.   Thank you God for your love and forgiveness. (1 John 1:9)   03-04-09
