I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 05-02-09

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I enjoy being a substitute school bus driver. I know we all have our stories about school buses, children and drivers. A bus driver’s job is challenging, but most students are respectful.

One thing I believe is that if you treat students as real people and with respect, they are willing to reciprocate. This principle generally holds true in all relationships. Of course, there are exceptions, but if we give the best, we can expect the best.

I enjoy the kind notes and compliments I get occasionally from students. A child handed me a note one day that read exactly like this, “We all appresheated your help. Also the part were you were the Bus Driver.” One of the most common compliments, however, is about my Virginia Tech cap. (OK so maybe you’re not a Hokie fan.) Those notes and compliments often make up for any problems that might arise on any given day.

Affirmation is something we all need. A kind word, a smile, a compliment, a thank you, a good morning, etc. can go a long way in making someone’s day. Our children live in a harsh world and some of them come and go from a home environment that is hostile to them. They need some affirmation as well as I do. After all, giving affirmation to others is biblical.

Philippians 2:3 (NLT)
3 Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. 05-02-09

Dear Lord, I am only a frail man in need of your love and compassion. Thanks for having mercy on me.
