I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology

Soup To NutzCartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Galatians 3:13 (NKJV)
13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"),

“Now, when God looks at me, He no longer sees my sin but sees His Son.”

The idea of redemption runs throughout the scripture. The word redemption means to purchase back something that had been lost by the payment of a ransom.

There are many passages in the New Testament which represent Christ's sufferings under the idea of a ransom or price, and the result thereby secured is a purchase or redemption (Compare Acts 20:28; 1Co 6:19, 20; Gal 3:13; Gal 4:4, 5; Eph 1:7; Col 1:14; 1Ti 2:5, 6; Tit 2:14; Heb 9:12; 1Pe 1:18, 19; Rev 5:9). The idea running through all these texts, however various their reference, is that of payment made for our redemption. The debt against us is not viewed as simply cancelled, but is fully paid. Christ's blood or life, which he surrendered for them, is the "ransom" by which the deliverance of his people from the servitude of sin and from its penal consequences is secured. (Illustrated Bible Dictionary: And Treasury of Biblical History, Biography, Geography, Doctrine, and Literature.)

What is the curse of the law? Death.

Romans 6:23 (NKJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 3:23 (NKJV)
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

How did Jesus redeem us? By His own death. The scriptures teach us that Jesus voluntarily took upon Himself our sin by becoming our sin. He was sinless but He chose to take upon Himself our sin therefore, He paid the full price for all the sin of mankind in order to redeem us, purchase us from the curse of sin.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

The verse above explains how God accomplished this. He made Him (the sinless Jesus) to be made sin (our sin) so that we could be made righteous (God’s righteousness) through Jesus (in Him). It is like this. Jesus takes my sin and in turn gives me His righteousness. It is like exchanging a dirty, ragged old coat for a clean new garment. Jesus took the dirty, ragged old coat and gave me His new clean garment. Now, when God looks at me, He no longer sees my sin but sees His Son. I have been redeemed by the grace of God.
