I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 04-27-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Making excuses comes easy.  Taking responsibility for one’s own actions does not.  Three boys were 2 hours late for school.  Their excuse was a broken wagon wheel.  The real reason was they were fishing.  Since they missed a test, the teacher had them sit apart from each other to do a make-up.  There was only one question, “Which wheel was broken?”  Excuses will get you into trouble, but responsibility will liberate you.

Luke 9:59-60 (NKJV)
59 Then He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Lord, let me first go and bury my father."
60 Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God."

These words of Jesus seem cruel at first glance, but most likely the father was not dead yet, and the son just didn’t want to be obedient to Christ’s claim on his life.  It was just a silly excuse; not a good reason.  We can all find excuses for not obeying God when we want too, and they are almost always silly.  However, God always knows the difference between our excuses and legitimate reasons.  No test is required.  The call to obedience is the test.  04-27-09
