I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-23-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

There is a lot of interest in psychics, channeling, astrology and such. We see it everywhere including bookstores and TV. It is nothing new. Should the Christian community be engaged in such things?

I once visited a church in which a guest speaker was extolling all the “benefits” of astrology, and in a weird way, connecting them to the Bible. He even had charts. It was all I could do to sit there and be quiet. I wondered why a church would even invite such a person, and I wanted to stand up and sound an alarm for everyone present.

Do you read the horoscope and if so, why? Ever played with a ouija board? Are these just innocent play? The Bible prohibits us from engaging in such activity, and it does so early on. It tells us that God killed King Saul and turned his kingdom over to David because he consulted a medium.

Leviticus 19:31 (NKJV)
31 'Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.

There are many other warnings in the Bible on this subject. Why? For one, God expects us to trust Him wholly and to seek His will through prayer and the scriptures. Secondly, evil spirits are real and they intend only harm for you. Thirdly, allowing our children to engage in these kinds of activities is dangerous, even if they seem innocent. Often, these become the first steps Satan uses to lure them into witchcraft and the occult.

Saul’s sin was that he “did not inquire of the Lord”. If you and I have the Lord to turn to, why do we need to seek another? He is sufficient. 06-23-09
