Cartoonology Devotional 08-20-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
We play Pictionary every year when my children and grandchildren visit for Thanksgiving. It can get pretty hilarious sometimes. The guys in the family resist playing, at first, but can sometimes get into it the most. This has become one of our annual traditions, but traditions can be observed more often. Most of us have traditions that we practice daily.
These kinds of traditions are good for a family. They help bond you together. They create fond memories in the minds of your children. They foster intimacy and provide opportunity for communication with each other that might not otherwise occur. There are many more benefits such as helping to decrease the likelihood of your children getting involved in drugs, etc.
We probably all remember some past traditions that mean a lot to us. One that stands out for me is eating Sunday lunch together as a family after attending church services. My mother and sisters would cook up a huge meal. Roast beef was always my favorite. Even after I was grown with children of my own, she would always fix a roast beef meal when we visited. I can smell its aroma, right now.
The word tradition is used mostly in a negative way in the Bible as it warns against traditions that keep one from honoring God. However, we do find it used in a positive way reminding us of what is righteous. So, we need to make sure our traditions are Godly and wholesome.
