I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-15-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The 37-story Grant Building in Pittsburgh, PA, built in 1930, originally had a red beacon that sent out a repeated spelling of the city’s name in Morse Code. It could be seen as far away as 150 miles. A smaller version of that beacon remains today but with one problem – it spells the city’s name as P-I-T-E-T-S-B-K-R-R-H.

Our whole life is a series of messages that we send out to our family, friends and coworkers. When we send out wrong signals, the results can do serious damage. Wrong signals could be the result of the way we dress, the language we use, the places we visit, the music we listen too, the movies we watch, the friends we choose, lack of church attendance and a host of other scenarios.

When we declare ourselves to be followers of Christ, there is a standard of conduct the Lord expects so as not to bring dishonor to His name and His cause. We can create a lot of confusion in the minds of people as to what it means to be a follower of Christ.

The wrong signal being emitted from the Grant Building probably won’t cause any serious harm, but our wrong signals certainly have that potential. It is a good idea to check out our beacon to make sure we are being true to Christ.

Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. 07-15-09
