I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology 03-17-09

Red & Rover

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

The pot of gold at the end of a rainbow is just a myth, of course.  Janet and I actually saw the end of a rainbow once while were missionaries in Portugal.  It touched down in a huge field.  We did not get real close to it, but there was no visible sign of any gold.  It was an amazing sight, however.  Here in the Blue Ridge Mountains, where we now live, that would be a very rare opportunity.

The real pot of gold is the rainbow itself.  God set the rainbow in the sky as a reminder of his covenant with all mankind through Noah.  God had destroyed all living things through the great flood except Noah, his family and all the animals placed on the ark.  Every time we see a rainbow, we are to remember this covenant, but God also says that He will remember His covenant through the rainbow.

Genesis 9:13-17 (NKJV)
13 I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.
14 It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;
15 and I will remember My covenant which
is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16 The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that
is on the earth."
17 And God said to Noah, "This
is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth."

Did you know that the rainbow is an eternal reminder of God’s covenant?  The scripture tells us that there is a rainbow in heaven.  John saw it in his revelation of last things as God allowed him to see Him on His throne (Revelation 4:3, 10:1).  Coupled with all the other things John said about heaven, it sounds like it is going to be a place of inexplicable beauty.  Makes me want to go, especially since the Lord Jesus will be there (Revelation 5:1-7).  How about you?

Christ has offered us a new and better covenant through His atoning death on the cross and resurrection from the grave (Hebrews 8:1-13).  If you haven’t already done so, place your faith in Him today and gain eternal life and a home in heaven.  This old world is going to pass away but not through flood.  It will be by fire as God judges the world in the last days (Revelation 20:7-10).  Please don’t wait too late.  03-17-09
