I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 04-20-09

Agnes
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I have heard the saying, “If God didn’t expect mistakes, He wouldn’t have made erasers”. I am not sure about that, but I have used my share of erasers. In a sense, God does even better than an eraser when He forgives sin. David asked God to “blot out” his sins.

Psalm 51:1 (NKJV)
1 To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David when Nathan the prophet went to him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness; According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, Blot out my transgressions.

Psalm 51:9 (NKJV)
9 Hide Your face from my sins, And blot out all my iniquities.

Psalm 51 is David’s prayer of repentance after his adulterous relationship with Bathsheba, and his murder of her husband, Uriah.

The word “erase” instead of the words ”blot out” might have been used by David if such a concept was in use during his day. Erasers and pencils were not invented yet. People used ink and the quill for writing, and the only thing you could do with a mistake was to blot it out with more ink.

God is so merciful toward the repentant sinner. Read the following scripture verses and see if you don’t agree.
Psalm 103:12 (NKJV)
12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.

Micah 7:19 (NKJV)
19 He will again have compassion on us, And will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins Into the depths of the sea.

Isaiah 38:17 (NKJV)
17 Indeed it was for my own peace That I had great bitterness; But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption, For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.

Hebrews 10:16-18 (NKJV)
16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,"
17 then He adds, "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."
18 Now where there is remission of these, there is no longer an offering for sin.

Give God praise for his forgiveness. If you have the need, ask Him to forgive you now. 04-20-09
