That would probably be considered a crime these days. I recall at least one occasion, but cannot remember whether it was my Mom or a schoolteacher who did it to me. I know for certain a schoolteacher couldn’t get by with that today. The scripture takes a rather dismal view of the human tongue, and rightfully so, because the tongue is what usually gets most of us into trouble. Below is how James describes it. James 3:6,8 (NKJV)
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.
8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Why is the tongue so unruly? James says we will use the tongue to bless God and at the same time curse men and then he says this ought not be. The tongue is really not the problem. The real problem is the heart. Only by our submission to Christ can it be tamed at all. Matthew 15:18 (NKJV)
