I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 03-23-09

Frank & Ernest
Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I am afraid of dogs, because I have been bitten several times.  That doesn’t mean I don’t like dogs, because I do.  Dogs just don’t like me.  That seems strange, because we had dogs when I was growing up.  I can’t help it, however.  My fear is picked up by a dog’s radar very quickly.  We had a dog, which we named Fluffy.  He was a white, furry Eskimo Spitz.  We got him as a tiny pup.  Fluffy was very loyal and would protect us when he felt necessary.  He once jumped up and bit a man’s wrist as he was handing a hammer to my dad.  I suppose he thought the man was going to do harm.  Fluffy lived 15 years and was killed by a car, after losing much of his eyesight.

Have you ever noticed that people will sometimes call a dog, whose name they don’t know, Fido?  The word Fido is derived from the Latin word “fidelis” which means faithful.  The Marine Corps slogan “Semper Fi” is a shortened form, meaning always faithful.    So, Fido is a good name for a dog since a dog is often very loyal to his owner and is referred to as man’s best friend.

In the Bible, God is called faithful (2 Thessalonians 3:3), and His word is called faithful (Revelation 21:5).  God calls His people to be faithful (Hebrews 10:23, Psalm 31:23).

Romans 5:1-2 (NKJV)
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,
2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
How is your faith holding out?  Are you being faithful to Christ and your church, or do you have an attitude of  “I can take it or leave it’?  Aren’t you glad God is faithful and doesn’t treat us that way (Hebrews 13:5, John 14:6))?  03-23-09
