I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 11-16-09

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Life is quite a paradox.  What is a paradox?  It is a contradiction in terms.  What makes trees look so beautiful in the fall is the fact that their leaves are dying.  We don't think of death as beautiful, but for the child of God it is exactly that.  For the Christian, death is simply a transition to a new life, which is much better.  While we watch the leaves die in the fall, and while the trees seem to be dying, we know that new life will appear again in the spring.

The changing seasons of the year are a wonderful reminder of the resurrection promised to those who die in the Lord.  They are constant reminders of death and new life.  Both are beautiful – the dying of the leaves in the Fall and their budding again in the spring.

The Apostle Paul was very eloquent in his description of death.  He knew that because of the atoning work of Christ on the cross, and because of the resurrection of Christ from the grave, those who place their faith in Him would not have to fear death.

A man's Christian wife died.  He could not bring himself to write on her tombstone the word "died".  Instead, he requested the word "ascended".  While our temporal, earthly bodies go down into the earth, our soul lives on forever in the presence of the Lord.  Indeed, death makes everything change colors.

2 Corinthians 5:4 (NLT)
4 While we live in these earthly bodies, we groan and sigh, but it's not that we want to die and get rid of these bodies that clothe us. Rather, we want to put on our new bodies so that these dying bodies will be swallowed up by life.   11-16-09
