I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-08-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Spiritual discernment is severely lacking today, and is one of the greatest challenges facing the church. This is one reason so many Christians dabble in things that run contrary to the ways of God and think nothing of it. Satan is cunning and he has subtle ways of luring us into these things.

What is discernment? Vine’s Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words describes it as “the ability to distinguish or separate out so as to investigate”. Discernment enables a person to examine, scrutinize and question in order to determine and recognize truth. In other words, discernment enables one to have good judgment. Through discernment, a person can separate false teaching from the true and genuine.

It is the inability of so many to discern truth that causes them to fall into cults, false religions, witchcraft and the occult. Cults typically prey on the weak and immature that have limited discernment.

Discernment does not come automatically to believers. We must study the scripture, fellowship with believers in a Bible-believing/preaching church, pray and grow in our walk with Christ. Nominal Christians will not develop healthy discernment.

The world offers us many things that require spiritual discernment from games, to books to music to movies. We must be on guard. A maturing walk with Christ is a mandatory.

Hebrews 5:14 (NKJV)
14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. 07-08-09
