I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-25-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Reading or misreading signs can be hilarious. I recall an incident as a child that took place while our family was traveling in the car. Reading was becoming fun to me at the time, and I was noticing every sign along the road. Out loud, I very seriously read the sign “Big Walker Lookout” as “Big Walker! Look Out!”. I took it upon myself to warn my dad about this looming monster on the loose. Everyone got a good laugh, and I learned some things about reading.

The Bible contains many messages that can be misread if one is not careful. Using a modern translation of the Bible helps, but you still have to read some passages carefully and studiously in order to know what the author intended. Reading the Bible carelessly can get you into trouble.

One example of this is the phrase “Money is the root of all evil”. “I once heard a preacher say on the radio that, “The lack of money is the root of all evil”. The Bible says neither of these. It is the “love” of money that becomes a problem.

1 Timothy 6:10 (NKJV)
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 06-25-09
