I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 08-19-09

Cartoonology Devotional 08-19-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
Sometimes the worst part about a dream is waking up, but some dreams are worth pursuing. Elvis Presley sang the song "Follow That Dream". The opening lyrics are:
Follow that dream, I gotta follow that dream
Keep a-movin, move along, keep a moving
Ive got to follow that dream wherever that dream may lead
Ive got to follow that dream to find the love I need
Unfortunately for him, the dream he followed led to his demise.
Martin Luther King, the African-American Civil Rights icon, had a dream, and it was, no doubt, inspired by his familiarity with the Bible as a pastor/preacher. He earned the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end racial segregation and discriminiation. We all remember his famous speech, "I Have A Dream" given in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963.
We find in the Bible that God often spoke to people in dreams. Probably the person most familiar to us is Joseph of the Old Testament. While Joseph's dreams got him into trouble with his brothers, his ability to interpret dreams got him out of trouble with the Egyptian Pharoah.
I believe that God still speaks to people in dreams. It is not the dream, however, that matters. Rather, it is like Elvis said – the pursuit of it. Keep in mind, however, dreams that do not square with the Bible or lead to doing the will of God, are all in vain. Those dreams should be avoided rather than pursued.
Jeremiah 23:28 (NLT)
28 "Let these false prophets tell their dreams, but let my true messengers faithfully proclaim my every word. There is a difference between straw and grain!
