I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 09-28-09

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
It seems racism and prejudice are getting harder to recognize, while at the same time we have supposedly made a lot of headway on the matter. When South Carolina

Congressman Joe Wilson recently called President Obama a liar from the floor during his health care speech, some tried to turn it into a political football by calling it racist. Ironiclly, crying racism has become a popular way of turning the truth on its ear. Wilson's outburst was rude, disrespectful and out of order, but I can hardly see how anyone can determine that single word to be a racist statement.

No doubt racism and prejudice still exist. It is something that requires our continual vigilance, because most all of us are prejudice in some way. The problem is we just do not recognize it, or we are unwilling to admit it.

One of the virtues of God is that He is not prejudiced. As one old black preacher said to me one time, "God is color blind". When we begin to see people as God sees them, we can value them as God values them. God does discriminate, but not on the basis of color or race. He discriminates on the basis of righteousness and unrighteousness. God does not hate men, but He hates sin.

God has provided a "fix" for sin. That "fix" is His only begotten son, Jesus Christ. Jesus came to take on the sin of the whole world so that no one needs to face the wrath of God. That is called love.

Acts 10:34-35 (NKJV)
34 Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.
35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him. 09-28-09
