I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 08-13-09

E. Larry Ross
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
While serving as a mission pastor in West Virginia, I had the privilege of having some close relationships with wonderful coal miners and their families. Two miners took me into a mine to show me how it all worked. It was only four feet tall and you had to move about in a crouched position. It was quite interesting and educational, but my muscles were very sore when we came out.
One thing the miners jokingly told me was that if you see the rats in a mine running for the exit, you had better follow them. This meant that deadly gasses were present which could be life threatening. In former times, they would actually take little birds into the mines as a means of checking for the presence of gas. If the bird died, this indicated danger. I am sure they use much more sophisticated means today, but the need to watch for early warning signs of danger in a coal mine has not changed.
The Bible has given us early warning signs concerning the future judgment of God upon this world. The second coming of Christ is always portrayed as imminent. We should not allow ourselves to be lured into apathy because it has been over 2000 years since Jesus died and rose from the grave.
Revelation 22:20 (NKJV)
20 He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus! 08-13-09
