I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology 08-14-09

B.C.
Cartoonology Devotional 08-14-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
The term "poker face" refers to a blank expression that does not reveal anything about the cards being held in a game of poker. You will hear the term used occasionally in other settings expressing the attempt to conceal one's true feelings and thoughts.
A "poker face" in the context of marriage will not serve well, because openness and honesty are essential to any relationship. As for marriage, the lack of communication is placed near the top of the list for causes of divorce.
A woman took her husband to the doctor. During the examination, she would answer every question he asked the man. Finally, the doctor asked her to step into the waiting room so that he could talk to him alone. After a few minutes, the doctor invited the wife back in. "I am sorry, I didn't know your husband cannot speak", the doctor told her. "He can't!?" the wife responded.
That story might be funny, but the lack of communication between a husband and wife is not. And to be honest, we men probably need the most work in the area. Genuine openness and honesty might be difficult for some of us, but the effort is worth our while. It will work in all other relationships, as well.
Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)
15 Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church.
