I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 09-18-09

Cartoonology Devotional 09-18-09
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Being number one is not necessarily a bad thing unless it causes you to have a repulsive attitude. Just being the best you can at something is probably most desirable even if it doesn't make you number one. In the Olympics there is always a number one, and then there is the last one with a host of others in between. Not everyone expects to be number one. Some people just want to do their best and participate. Occasionally, a dark-horse will come out of nowhere and surprise us by taking top honors.
In 1929 the dark-horse honors went to Olympian E.H. Liddell, a Scottish divinity student who was driven from the 100 meters by religious convictions that prevented him from running on Sunday. He came back and surprised everybody by winning the 400 meters in record time.

"Here is a character who could make a great movie," thought David Puttnam. "Here is a character who stands for something bigger than himself—putting duty to God before worldly success."

Puttnam hired a writer, Colin Welland, and a director, Hugh Hudson, who had made documentaries but never a feature film. The three then produced the movie Chariots of Fire.

Liddell knew something many people ignore – letting God be number one should be top priority. Doing so will make one a winner every time.

Matthew 6:31 (NKJV)
31 Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?'
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 09-18-09
