I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-13-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Life has many questions, and they are questions worth answering. One thing is for certain to any honest man is that the universe is much bigger than we are, and there must be a Power much bigger than that. We can come up with all kinds of interestingly creative ways of explaining it all.

The ancients were extremely creative. One ancient Chinese theory of the origin of the universe (cosmology) was that the universe was hatched from a black egg. According to the Bakuba (also called Kuba) people of central Africa (Congo), the first being was a white giant named Mbombo, who presided over a dark and watery world. A violent stomachache caused him to throw up the stars, moon and sun, which dried up the waters to reveal the Earth. A second bout of nausea led to the creation of people, animals, trees and more. Ewwww!

The Bible answers all our questions as to the origin of the universe. The creation story in Genesis makes it clear that the One True Living God is Creator of all, and there are numerous other places in the Bible that that give credence to it. Every time we look up at the heavens we can be encouraged by the fact that the same God sustains all.

Jeremiah 31:35 (NKJV)
35 Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The Lord of hosts is His name): 07-13-09
