I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-07-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Temptation needs no forwarding address. It follows wherever you go. Fleeing temptation is a constant need in our lives. How do we deal with temptation, then?

1. Keep a watchful eye against temptation. Matthew 26:41

2. Pray and ask God to help you resist. Luke 22:40

3. Look for the way of escape God provides. 1 Corinthians 10:13

4. Endure through temptation. James 1:12

5. Submit to God and resist Satan. James 4:7

Point number five in the list above is especially crucial, and it is crucial to understand the order of it. Actually, submitting to God is resisting the devil. You cannot submit to God without resisting Satan and you cannot resist Satan without submitting to God. The two go hand-in-hand.

The word “submit” is a military word in the original Greek. Therefore it is a command from God, the Supreme Commander-In-Chief. It means to surrender to God and focus on God’s Word, His laws, His ways, His salvation, etc. When we do, the devil has no defense and immediately flees.

We must remember that the devil is not afraid of us, but he is terrified of God. He knows he is a defeated enemy due to the atoning work of Christ upon the cross. So, don’t just run from the devil. You must run to God.

1 John 3:8 (NKJV)
8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 07-07-09
