I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 03-31-09

The Grizzwells
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Television has come a long way since I was a kid, but it obviously has not brought our society much good. I grew up with one TV in the house. All TV was black and white then, and we could only get one channel on ours. Reruns were perpetual, and shows were simple. I never got to see some TV shows until I was an adult. I never saw an episode of Gene Autry as a kid, because it did not play on our TV station.

My wife and I recently watched an action-movie on TV. It made my head spin with all of its story lines, many characters, high drama, incredible visual effects and fast-moving plot. I am still not sure exactly what happened!

Think what it is like trying to compete for people’s attention on Sunday morning in church. People are used to being entertained these days with high energy TV and movies. The truth is it is impossible to compete with it, although many preachers and churches are trying to do it with all kinds of unusual Sunday morning drama.

Call me old fashioned if you want, but I think it is a mistake to place a TV in your child’s bedroom. This is especially true if you have cable or satellite. First of all, that much exposure is not good for them and secondly, you don’t always know what they are watching. One thing is for sure, TV producers have an agenda, and part of that is to indoctrinate your children with everything wrong. It seems the whole world is upside down these days.

Recent studies reveal some shocking statistics. By age 70, people have watched 10 years of TV. Watching TV is one single activity children do most, second only to sleeping. In one week, children spend one entire day watching TV (iVillage).

There are many good reasons for placing limits on TV, but one is that the human mind is like a computer. Experts agree that some images are burned into the brain and remain there for a lifetime (http://www.link-zone.net/perspectives/powerofsex.shtml). This is particularly true for pornography.

The Bible tells us to focus our mind on godly things for good reason.

Philippians 4:8-9 (NKJV)
8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy--meditate on these things.
9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.

One more thing. It might be that adults are also watching too much TV. I see more adults going to sleep in church than kids. 03-31-09
