I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-27-09

E.Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

Have you ever publicly said or done something embarrassing, and it made you want to hide somewhere? You were just not thinking straight, or it came out all wrong, and you would avoid those people at all costs if possible.

“During the administration of Calvin Coolidge, an overnight guest at the White House had a particularly embarrassing experience. At breakfast he was seated next to the President. He noticed Coolidge take his cup of coffee, pour a large amount into the saucer, and slowly put in a little cream and sugar. The guest immediately followed suit. In some haste he also poured some coffee into his saucer. Then came his embarrassment, when he saw the President take his own saucer filled with coffee and place it on the floor for the cat.” (Encyclopedia of 15,000 Illustrations: Signs of the Times)

Indeed, being presumptuous can cause embarrassment. The Apostle Peter was, perhaps, the most presumptuous person in the New Testament. Once he rebuked Jesus as He explained that He would have to die. Later, he ran to the empty tomb.

Sometimes failures like this need to be revisited. In their book, Simple Steps To Impossible Dreams, Steven Scott and Gary Smalley say, “If you don’t revisit your failures, learn from them, write down what you’ve learned, and review it, you will repeat the same mistakes over and over again.” You can’t just hide out the rest of your life!

John 20:3-4 (NKJV)
3 Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.
4 So they both ran together, . . . 07-27-09
