I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 05-23-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I invited a preacher to be a guest speaker. He asked me if I wanted his $5.00 or $10.00 sermon. When I asked the difference, he jokingly responded, “$5.00”. I then told him that either price was inflated, and I had neither the 5 nor the 10.

Holding a Sunday congregation’s attention has become more difficult over the years mainly because of the technology and the inundation media. People are accustomed to being entertained, and it is difficult for them to sit through a 30-minute sermon. There is not enough action, drama and suspense compared to TV and movies.

Churches and pastors have resorted to all sorts of remedies including rock and roll music, secular video clips and elaborate stage props, and there is always someone with another gimmick he hopes will outdo all the others.

A man asked me how long I preached on Sunday. I probably shouldn’t have said it, but my response was, “Until I get finished”. Another told me if I preached against smoking, he would not come. He didn’t. Yet another asked me if my church opposed homosexuality. I just quoted him the Bible. He never came either. Present the message many ways. Just cannot compromise your integrity or the Word.

2 Timothy 4:3 (NKJV)
3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 05-23-09
