I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 01-07-10

Cartoonology.  There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I served as pastor for a small mission church in the West Virginia coalfields during 1980's.  We met in an old, one-room schoolhouse that was heated with a potbelly, coal stove.  I went there in the early summer months with only 3 people attending plus my family.  As the fall months began to approach, the church had grown some, primarily through Vacation Bible School efforts.

We fired up the stove as the fall months encroached, but some of the folks suggested we close up for the winter.  I asked why, and their response was, "No church has ever stayed here through the winter months."  I suggested that we be the first to do so, and they immediately agreed.

It got pretty cold in the old building, primarily because it was not insulated and, the building was elevated with no underpinning.  Many mornings, we could see our breath, and the ladies brought blankets to place over their legs.  However, two of the men, who had gotten saved during the summer, found an oil-fired furnace somewhere and installed it in the back corner of the church.  It was a little loud, but we thought we were now in "high cotton".

The following spring the church had grown more, and we had survived what no other church had attempted.  It was all because of the people's faith and boldness.  I wish we could return to those days – not necessarily to a one-room, schoolhouse like that one but to days when people had the faith, confidence and boldness to do whatever it takes to be the church.

1 John 5:14 (NKJV)
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  01-07-10
