I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 10-02-09

Cartoonology Devotional 10-02-09

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.
Blame-taking. That is a novel idea. There are not too may interested in doing that. If it could become a lucrative business, it would be popular, perhaps. Blame-giving, however, is plentiful. Have you ever noticed how you seldom hear of anyone admitting guilt? We usually hire lawyers to declare our innocence, even when we are guilty. What gets my goat is when the guilty party gets off because of some technicality that causes a judge to throw it out of court.

One of the first things we see in the Bible concerning human response to sin is to blame someone else. This is what Eve did when God confronted her about eating the forbidden fruit. Like Flip Wilson's Geraldine, she blamed Satan. Adam blamed Eve when God confronted him (Genesis 3:9-13). No one wanted to admit his or her sin. That hasn't changed much in time.

The Bible continually calls us to confession of sin and repentance. This is the only remedy for the guilt sin brings to our lives. Blaming others will never give us the forgiveness and peace we need. Even if we could find a blame-taker, at any price, it would do no good. The sin still lingers in our hearts and minds. God's remedy is the only thing that works.

2 Corinthians 7:10 (NKJV)
10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. 10-02-09
