I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Speed Bump
Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

All too often we use prayer for emergencies only, but prayer is designed to be a part of everyday life. It is to be the norm; not just for convenience.

Jesus taught his disciples to pray Matthew 6:9-13. It is often called the Lord’s Prayer but the phrase “model prayer” is more suitable. It was not intended for recital but as a guide.

The prayer can be broken down into three broad categories. The first is praise (VV. 9-10). All prayer should begin by recognizing to Whom we are praying and His worthiness of our adoration. Prayer is an act of worship.

The second category is petition (V. 11). Daily bread involves more than food to eat. It recognizes that God provides all we need and have. It is an expression of dependence on God rather than on our own abilities and efforts, and it is opportunity to pray on behalf of others.

The third category is penitence (VV. 12-13). Sin and its consequences are at the core of all our problems. We have need of forgiveness and the need to forgive. We need God’s protection from temptation. Confession of sin and repentance are necessary to being good Kingdom citizens.

Luke 11:1b (NKJV)
" . . . Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples." 05-18-09
