I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-22-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

According to the United States Army, many soldiers’ lives have been saved in Iraq and Afghanistan due to body armor, and the Army claims it has the best body armor in the world. Others dispute that, saying there is a new version that exceeds the current standards and the Army should consider switching.

One would certainly be foolish to engage in warfare without some kind of armor. Even police have to wear it today due to the extreme dangers associated with their job and the onslaught of extreme violence in our world.

The wearing of armor is nothing new. The ancients learned the value of it and we find in the Bible analogies made of it concerning the Christian life. The Apostle Paul makes us aware of the spiritual warfare in which the Christian is engaged against Satan and all his evil forces. I’m afraid that most Christians do not think much about it and are not even engaged much less suited up. As a result, Satan is having a heyday.

This war against spiritual forces is just as real as the wars in Iraq an Afghanistan, but I am sure that the fatality rate in this war is much higher than either of these. Read Ephesians 6:10-13 to find out what armor the Christian is to wear. Then, take time to put it on, because even when you have the best, it is of no value until you suit up.

Ephesians 6:13 (NKJV)
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
