I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 07-01-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

I have heard it said that if a person could meet himself on the street, he would not recognize himself. That is probably true, because we most likely do not see our self as others do. We each have a self-perception that is skewed. It is so much easier to see someone else’s flaws and weaknesses than it is to see your own.

A woman came to her pastor and confessed she had sinned the sin of pride. “What is it”, the pastor asked. “I stood in front of a mirror this morning and admired my beauty”, she responded. “Oh, the pastor said, “That was not pride, that was just wishful thinking.”

The Bible warns us on this subject but in a little different way.

James 1:23-24 (NLT)
23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror.
24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.

This text tells us that the Bible is like a mirror. In other words, we can read the Bible and see ourselves for just what we really are – sinners in need of a Savior. We must do more than just glance at it, We must study it so that we can see our image clearly and then make honest evaluation that will guide us in right decision-making. 07-01-09
