I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 08-18-09

Cartoonology Devotional. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

As much as some of us hated going back to school in the fall, there are things about it that are embedded in our memory forever. These are things like the smell of new clothes, new shoes, a new lunchbox, maybe a new book satchel and plenty of supplies for school lessons. Getting back on the school bus after a long summer recess was different every year, and it had its own distinctive smell. So did the schoolhouse. You can be blindfolded and identify it simply based on its smell.

Our school bus was always full. In fact, we had people standing in the aisle from the rear to the front by the time we reached the schoolhouse. Our stop, alone, filled nearly half the bus due to several large families living around the sawmill. They called us the sawmill gang. In addition to the Ross family, there were the Hawkins, the Watkins, the Goff, the Wilson and the Hudson families.

A new school year means many new things and new opportunities. We all like new things. So does God. God is in the "new things" business. Getting acquainted with those new things is a wonderful experience, too. They offer hope and promise for the future but also provide fond memories of the past.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 08-18-09
