I love cartoons and have noticed through the years that they quite often contain a spiritual message or hint. Cartoons often depict the culture of our day. This blog is an attempt to draw from cartoons and apply spiritual truths than can impact our lives. Let me know if you find them of any value. Previous devotionals are archived below.

Cartoonology Devotional 06-02-09

E. Larry Ross

Cartoonology. There is great theology in cartoons and comics.

We have all had close calls of some nature. I recall a few of my own like the time a car barely sideswiped me going 50 miles an hour. Makes a fellow think real hard. Just a little closer and it could have been disaster.

I recall another close call when I was a kid. One of the kids my Mom babysat decided to follow her to the garden to gather fresh vegetables even though he was told to stay in the house. It was still very muddy from a recent rain, and Mom didn’t want him tracking mud. He decided to come out to the garden anyway. After a good scolding, he turned on his heels and ran back down the hill toward the back porch. The problem was that he didn’t stop when he reached the storm door. Instead, he sailed right through the glass. Mom ran to his aid certain that he would be severely cut and bleeding. Fortunately, he just cut one of his fingers a little. It was a close call.

Have you ever wondered how differently your life might have turned out if one of those close calls had become reality? Of course, we will never know until we get to heaven, but it is comforting to know that God has a plan for our lives. He is watching over us and our close calls are just teaching opportunities in his eyes. Did you call it good luck when you had your near miss or just shrug it off to fate? We should get on our knees and thank God every day for his watchcare and protection over our lives. 06-02-09

Psalm 63:8 (NKJV)
